CAIE Accounting 9706 Paper 2: How to Master Structured Questions

Paper 2 is the backbone of AS Level Accounting (9706). It tests your ability to apply accounting knowledge to structured scenarios — ledger accounts, control accounts, financial statements, and correction of errors. With 120 marks and a 1 hour 45 minute time limit, every minute counts.

This guide breaks down exactly how to approach each question type for maximum marks.

Understanding Paper 2 Structure

CAIE Accounting 9706 Paper 2 typically contains 4–5 structured questions worth between 20 and 35 marks each. Common topics include:

• Ledger accounts and trial balance preparation. • Control accounts (trade receivables, trade payables, cash book). • Correction of errors and suspense accounts. • Financial statements of sole traders. • Partnership accounts (appropriation, current accounts). • Incomplete records and mark-up/margin calculations.

Questions are often linked — a mistake in Question 1(a) can cascade into Question 1(b). Read the entire question before writing anything.

The READ-MARK-PLAN-WRITE Method

Use this four-step approach for every structured question:

1. READ the entire question twice. Underline key figures, dates, and requirements. 2. MARK the marks available for each part. A 25-mark question deserves more time than a 10-mark part. 3. PLAN your layout on rough paper — especially for ledger accounts with many entries. 4. WRITE neatly with clear headings, dates, and narrations.

Students who start writing immediately without reading the full scenario are the ones who discover a conflicting figure on the last line — and have no space left to correct.

Ledger Accounts: Presentation That Wins Marks

Ledger account format is non-negotiable at A Level:

• Use T-account format with clear debit and credit sides. • Date every entry on the correct side. • Include narration for journal-derived entries. • Balance the account and bring down the balance (bal b/d) on the correct side. • Use folio references where the question provides them.

Common mistake: Posting all entries on one side without balancing. Examiners award 0 for an unbalanced account even if individual entries are correct.

Control Accounts: The Step-by-Step Approach

Control account questions follow a predictable pattern:

1. Open with the opening balance (debit for receivables, credit for payables). 2. Add credit sales / credit purchases for the period. 3. Add returns, discounts, and other adjustments as stated. 4. Subtract receipts/payments and closing balances. 5. The balancing figure is the amount missing from the subsidiary ledger.

Always show your additions and subtractions in a clear columnar format. Label each adjustment. If the question asks you to identify errors, explain why each item affects the control account.

Financial Statements: Format Discipline

For sole trader and partnership financial statements:

• Start with the income statement (trading account first, then profit and loss). • Show gross profit, operating profit, and net profit as distinct subtotals. • Prepare the statement of financial position with non-current assets, current assets, equity, and liabilities in the correct order. • Include comparative figures only if the question provides them.

Partnership questions require an appropriation account between the income statement and the balance sheet. Show interest on capital, interest on drawings, salaries, and residual profit share clearly.

Correction of Errors: Suspense Account Logic

When correcting errors:

1. Identify whether each error affects the trial balance agreement. 2. Errors that do not affect agreement go directly to the relevant ledger accounts. 3. Errors that do affect agreement require a suspense account entry first. 4. After all corrections, the suspense account must balance to zero.

Write journal entries in proper format: date, account debited, account credited, narration. This alone can earn 2 marks per correction even if your amounts are slightly off.

Time Management for Paper 2

Section — Suggested Time — Strategy · Question 1 — 25–30 min — Often the longest — do not rush · Question 2 — 20–25 min — Control accounts or corrections · Question 3 — 20–25 min — Financial statements · Question 4 — 20–25 min — Incomplete records or partnerships · Review — 10 min — Check arithmetic, balances, formats

Attempt every question. Even partial answers earn method marks. A blank page earns zero.
